Under the Local Government Act 1972, the county and administrative county of Glamorgan was abolished on April 1, 1974, with three new counties being established, West Glamorgan, Mid Glamorgan and South Glamorgan. Following local government reorganization, the counties of West Glamorgan, Mid Glamorgan and South Glamorgan were abolished on April 1, 1996.

The county of West Glamorgan was divided into the newly created county boroughs of:

* Swansea and

*Neath Port Talbot.

The county of Mid Glamorgan was divided into the county boroughs of:

* Bridgend,

*Merthyr Tydfil,

*Rhondda Cynon Taf

*and part of Caerphilly.

The county of South Glamorgan was divided into the county of:

* the Vale of Glamorgan and

*the county and city of Cardiff.

Swansea Museum is the oldest museum in Wales, and a fascinating treasure house of Swansea’s past history. The collections contain all kinds of objects from the past of Swansea, Wales, and the rest of the world.

Civil Registration Offices[edit | edit source]

The General Register Office holds a central copy of all birth, marriage, and death registrations in England. These certificates can be ordered from their website (a login is required but it is free to register and search).

Sometimes research might be required to determine where a town or parish was in a former registration district, or even its current district. For a list of the historic and current registration districts and their parishes, see Registration Districts in Glamorganshire.

Sometimes additional help is available from local registrars. For example, proof of death and close family relationship can make more recent records available. Visit or correspond with:
