Tracing Your Ancestors in South Yorkshire Guide

The 4 archive and local studies services in South Yorkshire (Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield) have worked together to compile a single guide to the main genealogical material in their offices and elsewhere. This guide is a supplement to more detailed information available on their websites.
Download the guide. It tells you what genealogical sources are available and where they are to be found.
The key genealogical resources are listed in church, chapel and cemetery registers, trade directories and probate records.
More information than ever before is being made available online, not only by ourselves but also by genealogical websites such as Ancestry.com, FindMyPast and Genes Reunited, etc.

Civil Registration Offices

The General Register Office holds a central copy of all birth, marriage, and death registrations in England. These certificates can be ordered from their website (a login is required but it is free to register and search). However, in some cases research can be more efficient working with the smaller, more specific records collections of county/district registry offices.

Sometimes research might be required to determine where a town or parish was in a former registration district, or even its current district. For a list of the historic and current registration districts and their parishes, see Civil Registration Districts in Yorkshire West Riding. South Yorkshire was created from the West Riding.
