The first census in Benin was taken in 1893, the year after it became a French possession. Information that may be found in the census includes:

  • Individual names
  • Relationships
  • Number of households for each village
  • Unmarried mature males
  • Widows who are heads of households
  • Brief physical descriptions
  • Estimates of the value of crop yields and income from livestock
  • Military service
