<font size="4.0"> The Layton FamilySearch Center offers many basic and advanced classes to help you with your family history work. <b><i>No reservations are required to attend any of our classes</i></b>. You can view the schedule of classes - <i>by date or by class title</i> - at the links below.  You can also scroll down to the class categories to see more information about each of the classes. We also have the options for you to access the <i>BYU Family History Virtual Classes and Webinars</i> library or to reserve one of our classrooms for your group with your own instructor.
You can register for one of our classes by clicking on the <b> More Information/Register </b> link to the right of any of the class names, then clicking on the registration link for the date, time and venue (In Person vs. Zoom) you wish to attend. Here you will also find class descriptions and class handouts.

And, family history is for everyone who is in a family, regardless of religion, race or nationality. Indexing is the process of taking information from historical record images and putting it into a digital format. Indexing turns the records into searchable sources, allowing researchers to find and attach them to ancestors in their family tree in FamilySearch.  This Basic Indexing class will introduce you to Web Indexing in FamilySearch. You will learn how to index, how to navigate the Indexing site and the importance of Indexing in Family Tree. A variety of records are available to index that are appropriate for anyone ages 11 to 111. A group of records can typically be indexed in just 15-30 minutes. You will learn how to access help for the various indexing projects. This class is appropriate for the beginner and as a review for someone who has not indexed recently.

Layton Utah FamilySearch Center Classes


Classes

The Layton FamilySearch Center offers many basic and advanced classes to help you with your family history work. No reservations are required to attend any of our classes. You can view the schedule of classes - by date or by class title - at the links below. You can also scroll down to the class categories to see more information about each of the classes. We also have the options for you to access the BYU Family History Virtual Classes and Webinars library or to reserve one of our classrooms for your group with your own instructor.


Beginning Classes

Introduction to FamilySearch

  • FamilySearch is a free genealogy program that allows access to “billions of ancestor profiles, photographs, and historical records."
  • You will learn about:
    • Landing Page resources
    • How to sign up for a free account
    • How to access and add to the Family Tree
    • Navigation strategies and tips to use throughout the program
    • What resources FamilySearch has to offer (site map)

  • From the FamilySearch home page, access menus for: Family Tree, Search, Memories, Get Involved, and Activities.

Person Page

  • Every person added to the Family Tree has a unique PID (Personal Identification) number and their own Person Page. Learn how to get to a Person Page from multiple places in Family Tree. From the Person Page:
    • Check your relationship with the selected person
    • View an Overview (Discovery page) about the person
    • Check details - including vital statistics and family relationships
    • Review and add Sources and Memories
    • View a timeline with accompanying map
    • Access FamilySearch partner sites for researching more information

Ancestry--Basic Research

    • Form a plan of action to correct relationship errors

Merging Duplicates

  • What are duplicates? What is merging? How does it work? These are questions that will be answered in this class. Identify duplicates - where they can be found, and how to verify that they are the same person. Use the Merge Tool and correct procedures to merge duplicates.

Groups: Classroom Reservation

Reserve a Classroom for Family History Instruction

  • Reserve one of our classrooms for your church, family or other group. The Center can provide an instructor if needed.
  • Each member of your group will have their own computer, and the classroom includes an instructor computer with overhead projection.
  • If needed, one of our missionaries will help get you started with the equipment.
  • This is a great opportunity to provide instruction on any topic of Family History to your group using the Center's state-of-the art equipment.
  • Classrooms are available Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday at 7pm, Saturday at 9am and 11am, and Sunday at 2pm and 4pm. NOTE: Reservations must be made at least 3 days prior to the date you need the classroom.
