The year 1738 brough the law to begin universal schooling in Norway. It stated that children were to learn basic knowledge according to "Erik Pontopppidas explanations". The law of confirmation was established in 1736 which stated that in order to marry a male or female must have passed confirmation. Confirmation usually took place when a young person was between the ages of 13 and 20 years old. The candidates was usually nearer 19 years of age in the period close to 1736 and 13 to 16 years of age later. In the beginning the schooling only included religeous reading, but later other subjects were added.
