Researching Around Staunton: A brief look as to who has what

Augusta County Courthouse: Wills 1745-present, deeds 1745-present, marriage records 1785-present, birth and death records 1853-1896, vestry book, Augusta Parish 1745-1776. A more extensive list is available from the County Clerk’s office. Hours: Mon.-Fri. 8:30-5, 1 E. Johnson St., 540-245-5316

Historic Staunton Foundation has information on all properties within the historic districts; Sanborn insurance maps; small collection of articles and books. Hours: Mon.-Fri. 9-5, 540-885-7676, www.historicstaunton.org , located in the R.R. Smith Center for History & Art, 20-22 South New Street, www.rrsmithcenter.org

Augusta County Historical Society archives include paper documents, photographs, and books pertaining to the history of Augusta County, Staunton, and Waynesboro. The collection includes a great deal of social, architectural, and genealogical material. The bulk of the collection is 19th and early 20th century.
