{{TOC left}}Most archives and libraries collect records about local residents (biographies, family histories, and local histories) and about nearby places (maps, gazetteers, and place-finding aids). They often compile reference helps and special indexes to important local sources. In many communities they serve as a meeting place for local historical and genealogical societies, and may be able to provide referrals to people who are willing to look up information in local records. Before you visit an archive or a library, contact them and ask for information on their collection, hours, services, and fees.
When one of these institutions is referred to elsewhere in this Wiki, return to this page for the address.

:The [http://www.marquette.edu/library/archives/indians.shtml Native America Collections] preserve the history of Catholic evangelization of the Americas' aboriginal Indian peoples. This includes directories, genealogies, photos, and Saint Kateri Tekakwitha. Their '''''[http://www.marquette.edu/library/archives/teaching.shtml Guides to Catholic-Related Records about Native Americans in the United States]''''' (and Canada) contain over 1,000 repository entries which provide contact information on the churches and repositories that hold these records, brief descriptions about records, and identification of the Native groups represented and the related Catholic organizations involved.

| |||

Other libraries and archives '''not''' found on the above list also have sources and information about American Indian ancestors. For a list significant genealogical repositories which may have additional American Indian sources see

Most archives and libraries collect records about local residents (biographies, family histories, and local histories) and about nearby places (maps, gazetteers, and place-finding aids).
The FamilySearch Library has copies of many of the records found in archives and libraries, but most repositories will have additional sources.

There are three major tribal groups in Michigan today: the Chippewa (Ojibwe), the Ottawa, and the Potawatomi. They comprise what is called the Three Fires Council. Although these three tribes have similar cultures and share the same territory, there are still some differences.

- The Native America Collections preserve the history of Catholic evangelization of the Americas' aboriginal Indian peoples. This includes directories, genealogies, photos, and Saint Kateri Tekakwitha. Their Guides to Catholic-Related Records about Native Americans in the United States (and Canada) contain over 1,000 repository entries which provide contact information on the churches and repositories that hold these records, brief descriptions about records, and identification of the Native groups represented and the related Catholic organizations involved.
