47th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry

Brief History[edit | edit source]

The 47th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry completed its organization in December, 1861, at Camp Trenton, Gibson County, Tennessee. At Chickamauga only a remnant surrendered in April, 1865. [1]

Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin[edit | edit source]

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.

Company A (Captain J. R. White) later William Stacy, organized December 1, 1861. Many men from Obion County

Company I (Captain William S. Moore) Many men from Obion County

Company H (Captain B. E. Holmes) later Captain W. H. Holloman. Many men from Obion County

Company D (Captain W. M. Watkins) - many men from Dyersburg, Dyer County

Company E ( Captain G. B. Miller) - many men from Dyersburg, Dyer County
The information above is from The Goodspeed History of Tennessee, Vol. 12

Company B (Captain William Gay) - many men from Gibson County

Company F (Captain J. L. Branch) - many men from Gibson County

Company G (Captain Joseph Carthell) - many men from Gibson County

Company K (Captain Green Holmes) - many men from Gibson County

The information above is from The Goodspeed History of Tennessee, Vol. 12

The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors database lists 1,325 men on its roster for this unit. Roster.
