The Malheur Reservation was established in eastern Oregon for the Northern Paiute Indians on 12 September 1872, with the intent of concentrating the Indians of the area on this reservation.

After the Bannock War, many were removed by the army to the Yakima Reservation in Washington. Some descendants of the Northern Paiutes now live on the Burns Paiute Indian Colony in Oregon.

The Malheur Reservation was discontinued in October 1879.
