The Hopi Agency is the administrative office for the Bureau of Indian Affairs on the Hopi and Kaibab Reservations in Arizona. Its current supervising field office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs is the Phoenix Area Office.

History

The Hopi Agency is the successor to the Moqui Pueblo Agency, whose name was changed to the Hopi Agency, 1 July 1923.

Records

Agencies and subagencies were created as administrative offices of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and its predecessors. Their purpose was (and is) to manage Indian affairs with the tribes, to enforce policies, and to assist in maintaining the peace. The names and location of these agencies may have changed, but their purpose remained basically the same. Many of the records of genealogical value (for the tribe and tribal members) were created by and maintained by the agencies.

Some records of the Hopi Agency are in the Pacific Regional Archives of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) in Los Angeles. They consist mostly of administrative records for the Moqui Pueblo Agency prior to the name change which took place in 1923. However, there is a census of the Hopi Indians in the Western Navajo Agency, 1922-1924, and a Register of Pupils, 1907-1911 which may be of interest to family historians.

Microfilm copies of ...Narrative and Statistical Reports... for the Hopi Agency, 1924-1936, are included in National Archives Microcopy M1011, roll 65-66, available in the National Archives system and in the collections of the FamilySearch Library in Salt Lake City (their microfilm number 1724283-1724284). Reports for some years are missing.

Annual Indian Census Rolls were taken at this agency for 1924 thru 1939. These rolls have been microfilmed by the National Archives as part of their Microcopy Number M595, rolls 188 thru 195. Copies of these records are also available at the National Archives, their Regional Archives, and at the FamilySearch Library and its FamilySearch centers (their microfilm numbers 576877-576884). These census rolls are also available online at Ancestry.com's subscription web site.
