SATURDAY, July 30, 10:30 AM-12:00 PM - ONLINE RESOURCES REGARDING ENSLAVED ANCESTORS - Speaker: Dr. Charles Foy
Often genealogical research regarding African American ancestors ends with the 1870 U.S. census, as earlier records of enslaved peoples rarely contain surnames. Despite this significant barrier to detailing black life in the Colonial and Antebellum eras, there are online resources that can enable one to develop a fuller picture of one's ancestors. In this presentation Dr. Foy will discuss and demonstrate such online resources.

Dr. Foy is a social historian and an Associate Professor of History at Eastern Illinois University. He specializes in uncovering the hidden lives of black mariners in the Age of Sail. He continues to work on the development of a black mariner database that as of 2013 contained records on more than 24,000 black mariners and black maritime fugitives.
