Suriname Emigration and Immigration[edit | edit source]

"Emigration" means moving out of a country. "Immigration" means moving into a country.
Emigration and immigration sources list the names of people leaving (emigrating) or arriving (immigrating) in the country. These sources may be passenger lists, permissions to emigrate, or records of passports issued. The information in these records may include the emigrants’ names, ages, occupations, destinations, and places of origin or birthplaces. Sometimes they also show family groups.

Immigration into Suriname[edit | edit source]

  • Europeans arrived in the 16th century, with the Dutch establishing control over much of the country's current territory by the late 17th century. During the Dutch colonial period, Suriname was a lucrative source of sugar, its plantation economy driven by African slave labor and, after abolition of slavery in 1863, indentured servants from Asia.
  • In 1954, Suriname became one of the constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. On 25 November 1975, Suriname left the Kingdom to become an independent state, but continues to maintain close economic, diplomatic, and cultural ties.[1]

Emigration From Suriname[edit | edit source]

KNOMAD Statistics: Emigrants: 263,300. Top destination countries: the Netherlands, France, the United States, Guyana, Curaçao, Aruba, Canada, Sint Maarten (Dutch part), Brazil, the Dominican Republic[2]

Records of Suriname Emigrants in Their Destination Nations[edit | edit source]
