Given that Guadalajara was the seat of the Viceroyalty of Nueva Galicia throughout the colonial era of Mexico, the city contains some of the document repositories that are of most genealogical value not only for Jalisco, but for other states that comprised Nueva Galicia, including Zacatecas, Aguascalientes and Nayarit.

The archive holds the oldest civil records pertaining to the governments of Nueva Galicia. Records include land grant and transfer documents. The archive also holds historic judicial records. The following are the collections held at the archive:

The historical archive of the Archbishopric of Guadalajara, Jalisco, has gone through several stages that can be simplified into two: the meritorious task of collecting and preserving the documents until the end of the 19th century, and the second, the opening to public use of researchers, academics and students. It holds historical ecclesiastical records including records related to the investigations and accreditation of clergy, documents related to marriage dispensations and diocese newsletters.

The museum reveals the history of the city of Guadalajara and various cultural aspects of the place. It is located in a building from the late seventeenth century, which was part of the Convent of Capuchin Nuns. It has ten showrooms; the six on the ground floor offer a historical, urban, ethnographic and artistic tour of the city and its inhabitants from the conquest to modern times.

The museum tour ranges from the first settlers of the region to the revolutionary movement, with aspects of the life and customs of the ethnic groups that inhabit the state. It has a paleontological collection, of which a complete mammoth skeleton and a collection of fossils found in the surroundings stand out. The many archaeological remains, ranging from projectile points and utensils from the first settlers to the artistic expressions of western Mesoamerican cultures, provide an overview of the cultural development of the region. The ethnographic heritage of the Cora and Huichol peoples of the area stands out. It also has a sample of paintings from the 17th to the 20th centuries, by authors such as Echave, Juárez, Rodríguez Juárez, Villalpando, Cabrera, Rivera and Dr. Atl.
