Many different religions existed in Zwolle before 1811. Dutch Reformed, Catholic, Lutheran, Jewish, Waalonia Reformed and Mennonite(Doopsgezinde)

All couples, regardless of their religion, were required before 1794/5 to have their marriage registered in the Dutch Reformed church. From 1795-1811 all couples were required to marry before the secular authorities (''gerecht'').Burials of non-Dutch Reformed persons may also have taken place in the Dutch Reformed church.

In the city of Zwolle were the churches Sint Michiels (or the Grote Kerk), Bethlehem Kerk and the Broerenkerk. They shared registers except for baptisms in the Broerenkerk between 1774 and 1794.

Outside the city (the former Zwollerkerspel) were two churches- in Mastenbroek and Windesheim. In Mastenbroek baptisms were recorded from 1727 and marriages over 1739-1793. Burials were recorded from 1761 to 1828. The baptisms and marriages are transcribed at VPND. In Windesheim baptisms were recorded from 1659, marriages from 1661 and burials from 1729. The baptisms, and marriages to 1776 are transcribed at VPND. A cemetery also existed at the Bergklooster.

There were 4 Roman Catholic parishes in Zwolle- Hoornsteeg, Spiegelsteeg, Bogenkerk and Koestraat. Their records for baptisms and marriages start in the late seventeenth century. There were no rural parishes in Zwolle, so Catholics living in Zwollerkerspel had to attend an urban parish- usually the closest one to where they lived, which for some may have been Dalfsen, Heino or Kampen.

Many secular records were kept by the authorities in the city of Zwolle. In particular, they kept birth records for non-Dutch Reformed children from around 1727 onwards, categorized by religion.  Between 1774 and 1794 another more detailed register was also kept for these births- a very useful supplement to church records. Birth records for Dutch and Wallonian Reformed children were also kept from 1774.The HCO has online all images of these records, which include far more than is described here.

In 1811 the Napoelonic Regime began the  [[Netherlands Civil Registration|civil registration]] of births, marriages and deaths. This has been continued by the Dutch government ever since. 
 
For both the former municipalities  Zwolle and Zwollerkerspel, births from 1811-1912, marriages from 1811-1932 and deaths from 1811-1960 are on [[WieWasWie]] and [http://openarch.nl/ OpenArch] 
 
The original images are not linked to this index, so use the FamilySearch Catalog that may/have images for births 1913-1916, marriages 1933-1941 and deaths 1961-1966. Births older than 100 years, marriages older than 75 years and deaths older than 50 years are able to be publicly released but archives can be behind putting them online. Current policy is to release records in ten year blocs, so that in 2018 marriages to 1942 will be released and in 2023 births to 1922 and deaths to 1972 will be released.

Many secular records were kept by the authorities in the city of Zwolle. In particular, they kept birth records for non-Dutch Reformed children from around 1727 onwards, categorized by religion. Between 1774 and 1794 another more detailed register was also kept for these births- a very useful supplement to church records. Birth records for Dutch and Wallonian Reformed children were also kept from 1774.The HCO has online all images of these records, which include far more than is described here.

Civil Registration

In 1811 the Napoelonic Regime began the civil registration of births, marriages and deaths. This has been continued by the Dutch government ever since.

For both the former municipalities Zwolle and Zwollerkerspel, births from 1811-1912, marriages from 1811-1932 and deaths from 1811-1960 are on WieWasWie and OpenArch

The original images are not linked to this index, so use the FamilySearch Catalog that may/have images for births 1913-1916, marriages 1933-1941 and deaths 1961-1966. Births older than 100 years, marriages older than 75 years and deaths older than 50 years are able to be publicly released but archives can be behind putting them online. Current policy is to release records in ten year blocs, so that in 2018 marriages to 1942 will be released and in 2023 births to 1922 and deaths to 1972 will be released.

Population Registers were kept from 1850.

The Zwolle General Index (Generale Index) is a searchable database on the site of the HCO of Zwolle records. One notable collection is the 1812 census, which often includes birthdates and names of parents.
