Brief History

The 42nd Regiment, Tennessee Infantry was formed at Camp Cheatham, Tennessee, in November, 1861. Very few were included in the surrender on April 26, 1865. [1]

Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.

  • Company A - Men from Hickman County.
  • Company B - Men from Hickman County.
  • Company C - Men from Cheatham County.
  • Company D - Men from Humphreys County.
  • Company E - An Alabama company.
  • Company F - An Alabama company.
  • Company G - "The Perry Blues." Men from Perry County.
  • Company H - An Alabama company.
  • Company I - An Alabama company.
  • Company K - An Alabama company.
