Lancashire was comprised of 69 ancient parishes, but well over 500 extant churches prior to 1851. Here's a list of Lancashire parishes and township chapelries that begin with the letter A and the pre-1858 courts that had ecclesiastical (including probate) jurisdiction over them.  These jurisdictions held authority over and records for such events as issuing marriage licences, bonds, allegations, oversight in ecclesiastical (church) court proceedings and in other important matters pertaining to ancestry. For other Lancashire parishes and chapelries, click on a link:
==Introduction==
Before 1837 [[England Church Records|church records]] are the main source for genealogical research in Lancashire. They typically record baptisms, marriages and burials. After 1837 they were superseded by [[England Civil Registration|Civil Registration]]. However they remain useful post-1837 for determining which religions your ancestors belonged to and due to the costs for accessing civil registration records.

Lancashire was comprised of at least 75 ancient parishes, but well over 400 extant chapels (chapelries) and district churches prior to 1851. It is very important to note that each parish had many chapels with their own registers. On average each parish had 8, but Manchester had about 160!

Introduction[edit | edit source]

Before 1837 church records are the main source for genealogical research in Lancashire. They typically record baptisms, marriages and burials. After 1837 they were superseded by Civil Registration. However they remain useful post-1837 for determining which religions your ancestors belonged to and due to the costs for accessing civil registration records.

Church of England[edit | edit source]

Early morning view across the Lune valley, from near Crook of Lune

Lancashire was comprised of at least 75 ancient parishes, but well over 400 extant chapels (chapelries) and district churches prior to 1851. It is very important to note that each parish had many chapels with their own registers. On average each parish had 8, but Manchester had about 160!
