Library for the University of Oregon

Special Collections and University Archives

Housed separately from the general collection in the Knight Library, Special Collections includes the following departments:

  • Oregon Collection: The Oregon Collection brings together a wealth of material about Oregon and its peoples. In addition to highlighting regional and local histories, the Oregon Collection also contains the works of Oregon authors.
  • Manuscripts Collection: Along with the personal papers of prominent Oregonians such as the late Senator Wayne Morse, this collection includes the archives of individuals, organizations, and businesses active both within and beyond the state's borders. Major areas of significant collection strength include Oregon history, western fiction, science fiction, children's literature, Christian missionaries to East Asia and elsewhere, the conservative and libertarian movement of the mid-twentieth century, environmental studies, and communal studies.
  • Photograph Collection: Special Collections and University Archives holds over half a million historic photographs and negatives, including the archives of Lee Moorhouse, Doris Ulmann, Ray Atkeson, Clarence Andrews, Dan Powell, Bernard Freemesser, and the Angelus Studio. The collection contains work by more than 500 Oregon photographers, vintage and modern, prominent and little known.
