Durango is in the northwest part of the country and bordered by Chihuahua, Coahuila, Zacatecas, Nayarit and Sinaloa. Indigenous peoples were first in the area such as Huichols, Coras, Tepehuanos and Tarahumaras. The Spaniards came in 1532. Natural resources come from mining including gold, silver, iron, mercury and deposits of marble.
