Brief History[edit | edit source]

The 18th Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry (Newsom's) also called the 19th Regiment was organized in May, 1864, by consolidating six companies of Newsom's Tennessee Cavalry Regiment and four companies of Forrest's Alabama Cavalry Regiment. It moved to Alabama on May 3,1865, The next day they were included in the surrender of the department.^[1]

Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin[edit | edit source]

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.

Company A - Captain William N. Barnhill
Company B - Captain Robert M. May
Company C - Captain William Wilson or (Willson)
Company D - Captain T.H. Taylor - Some men from Henry and Lake Counties.
Company E - Captain John B. Michie - Men from McNairy County.
Company F - Captain John Robert Damron - Men from McNairy County.
Company G - Captain Joseph J. Sharp
2nd Company G - Captain Thomas I. Dick
Company H - Captain J.G. Sharp
Company I - Captain L.C. McClerkin
Company K - Captain W.D. Stratton
