The 11th Kentucky Infantry was organized in December, 1861, at Calhoon, Kentucky, under Colonel P.B. Hawkins. The regiment participated in the battle of Shiloh and from that date on it was actively engaged and participated in all the early battles in Tennessee. They mustered out at Bowling Green Kentucky, December 16, 1864. New recruits and veterans were transferred to Company 1, of the 6th Veteran Cavalry. <ref>Kentucky. The 11th Regiment, Kentucky Infantry was organized at Camp Calhoun, Kentucky, December 9,1861. It was ordered to Louisville, Kentucky, November 14; thence to Bowling Green, Kentucky, and duty there until December. The regiment mustered out December 16, 1864.(Union)[1]

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.
