Brief History
[edit | edit source]

The 1st Regiment, Michigan Sharpshooters was organized at Kalamazoo and Dearborn, Michigan,  April 14 to October 7, 1863. It was mustered in on July 7, 1863. The regiment was mustered out on July 28, 1865, Washington D. C. [1]

The Wikipedia article 1st Regiment Michigan Volunteer Sharpshooters gives a brief history of the unit including places served, battles fought and commanders.

Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin[edit | edit source]

Men often enlisted in  a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded.  However if you are unsure which company your ancestor  was in, try the company recruited in his county first.

Company A - Many men from Calhoun County - see Roster

Company B - Many men from Ottawa County - see Roster

Company C - Many men from Hillsdale County - see Roster

Company D - Many men from St. Clair and Calhoun Counties - see Roster

Company E - Many men from Ingham County - see Roster

Company F - Many men from Jackson County - see Roster

Company G - Many men from Berrien and Cass Counties - see Roster

Company H - Many men from Branch County - see Roster

Company I - Many men from Berrien and Jackson Counties - see Roster

Company K - Many men from Oceana and Emmet Counties - see Roster

Unassigned Company - Many men from Jackson County - see Roster

See Rosters, as there were men from many different Counties in these Companies
