Brief History[edit | edit source]

The 60th Infantry regiment was formed at Charleston, Tennessee, in November, 1863. Ten companies from the 1st and 3rd Battalions, Hilliard's Alabama Legion made up the unit. Its members were from the counties of Coosa, Montgomery, Chambers, Lowndes, Butler, Pike, and Henry. It surrendered with 14 officers and 170 men.^[1]

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.
