History
The Diocese of Manchester was founded in 1847, having previously been part of the Diocese of Chester.  It was founded with the deaneries of Amounderness, Blackburn, Leyland, and Manchester, together with a large part of the deanery of Lonsdale and roughly one third of the deanery of Kendal.

In 1926 the Diocese of Blackburn was taken out of the Diocese of Manchester, which was left with just the parishes within the hundred of Salford. The final boundary change in 1933 saw the diocese annex the Wythenshawe parishes from the Diocese of Chester.
