Background[edit | edit source]
Types of Records[edit | edit source]
- Tahrir - The Ottoman Turks conducted extensive surveys of land and population for tax purposes from 1835-1870. Some of the early surveys listed only the number of household members with no names.
Coverage and Compliance[edit | edit source]
- Tahrir - These land and property records likely cover less than 10% of the total population. Women and children are generally not listed and remote localities may not be surveyed.
Information Recorded in the Records[edit | edit source]
Tahrir - Names of heads of households and of any other taxpayers living in the same households, occupation and income, sometimes include names of females and children.
Strategy[edit | edit source]
Land and Property Records are likely held at the National Archives of Tunis (see contact information above).
