New Zealand Obituaries[edit | edit source]

Obituaries from newspapers and magazines can provide details of a person’s life that are not found in other records. They can supplement and enhance the information found in civil registration or church records, or even substitute for missing records. Obituaries can provide dates and places of important events, names of relatives, place of burial, occupations, places of abode throughout one’s life, and other valuable information.

Obituaries appear in newspapers, church magazines, society magazines, and similar sources. Surviving or microfilmed copies of these sources are located in archives and libraries throughout New Zealand. See [[New Zealand Archives and Libraries for addresses.

A bibliographic source for newspapers is Union List of New Zealand Newspapers Published before 1940, listed in New Zealand Newspapers.

Individuals and groups have created indexes to obituaries, principally from newspapers. These indexes are located at various archives and libraries in New Zealand. Many have been microfilmed and are available at the FamilySearch Library.
