Background[edit | edit source]

These records are broadly known as pendaftaran sipil (civil registration), and are used to record births, marriages, and deaths. Earliest records date from 1828 during the Dutch colonial period. Some civil marriages and deaths were recorded as early as 1750. A number of records were destroyed during the Second World War. Most records for the Indonesian population begin after independence in the 1940s. FamilySearch has some civil registration for Indonesians, the Chinese-Indonesians, and the Dutch-European Indonesians. For more information on these records see Indonesia, Civil Registration Records - FamilySearch Historical Records.
