A parish workhouse operated at Claughton dating from 1795.<br>The Garstang Poor Law Union was formed on 31st January 1837.<br>The first Garstang Union workhouse was the former parish workhouse building at Claughton. <br>In 1876, a new workhouse accommodating 67 inmates was built at Bowgreave.
