United States U.S. Military West Virginia Military West Virginia in the Civil War 5th Regiment, West Virginia Cavalry

Brief History[edit | edit source]

Organized at Ceredo, W. Va., September 2, 1861, and mustered in October 18, 1861.
Consolidated with 9th West Virginia Infantry November 9, 1864, to form 1st West Virginia Veteran Infantry. ^[1]

Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin[edit | edit source]

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.
