==Coverage and Compliance==
==Background==
Unlike its neighbors, Iran, also known as Persia, has been independently ruled since ancient times. The beginnings of a large-scale census in Iran could be seen in the 19th century during the Qājār Dynasty as regional surveys were commissioned to gather data about the population, crops, and resources for taxation purposes. A full national census was attempted in the 1930s but was abandoned due to international conflicts. The first complete national census was successfully conducted in 1956, and since then, Iran has conducted censuses every ten years until 2006, when the interval was changed to five years.

===Types of Censuses===

====Qājār Dynasty Censuses====
'''1789-1925:''' The first large-scale censuses in Iran were conducted in the early 20th century during the reign of Naser al-Din Shah Qājār. These censuses aimed to gather information on the population and resources of the country.<ref>Britannica, T. ==== Pahlavi Dynasty Census ====
'''1925-1979:''' More systematic and comprehensive censuses were conducted during this period. The first nationwide census was carried out in 1956, followed by subsequent censuses in 1966, 1976, and 1986 (see online resources above for links to census data).<ref>Afary, J., "Pahlavi dynasty," ''Encyclopedia Britannica'', September 5, 2024, <nowiki>https://www.britannica.com/topic/Pahlavi-dynasty</nowiki>.</ref>
====Iran Statistical Census====
Iran statistical census data at Iran Data Portal was created by Syracuse University with PDF versions of the censuses for the years 1956, 1966, 1976, 1986, 1996, 2006, 2011, and 2016. Does not contain individual names.

==== Islamic Republic of Iran Censuses ====
'''1979-current:''' These censuses reflect the priorities of the current government, with a focus on economic self-sufficiency, and population growth. Modern technology has also made these censuses more accurate and comprehensive (see online resources above for links to census data).
