==Background== | |||
Yemen was considered to be part of the [[Ottoman Empire Genealogy|Ottoman Empire]] from 1538-1635, and from 1849 until the end of WWI in 1918. Because regular Tanzimat administration had yet to be established in the Hijaz and surrounding areas, Yemen may not have been included in empire-wide censuses (conducted primarily for administrative and military purposes, focusing on male inhabitants). During the [[England Genealogy|British]] occupation of southern Yemen (1839-1967), more systematic records were kept, including detailed [https://bll01.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/discovery/search?query=any,contains,Yemen&tab=LibraryCatalog&search_scope=Not_BL_Suppress&vid=44BL_INST:BLL01&lang=en&offset=0 administrative files]. The [https://webapps.ilo.org/ilostat-files/SSM/SSM5/E/YE.html International Labor Organization] has noted that censuses were conducted in 1973 and 1988 in the former People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (PDRY) and in 1975 and 1986 in the former Yemen Arab Republic (YAR). After unification, a national census was conducted in [https://cso-ye.org/en/census-reports/ 1994], providing comprehensive demographic data.<ref>Stanford J.
