'''Colonial Records'''
==Background==
A Handbook of Arabia: a handbook compiled by British diplomats around the Persian Gulf. This handbook includes information about the tribes in Yemen and the areas they resided in.
Yemen was considered to be part of the [[Ottoman Empire Genealogy|Ottoman Empire]] from 1538-1635, and from 1849 until the end of WWI in 1918. Because regular Tanzimat administration had yet to be established in the Hijaz and surrounding areas, Yemen may not have been included in empire-wide censuses (conducted primarily for administrative and military purposes, focusing on male inhabitants). During the [[England Genealogy|British]] occupation of southern Yemen (1839-1967), more systematic records were kept, including detailed [https://bll01.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/discovery/search?query=any,contains,Yemen&tab=LibraryCatalog&search_scope=Not_BL_Suppress&vid=44BL_INST:BLL01&lang=en&offset=0 administrative files]. The British kept administrative records during their occupation from 1839-1967. There are ~12,323 files in a collection that is kept in the British Library: Asian and African Studies. These files may or may not contain information or genealogical value.

Background[edit | edit source]

Yemen was considered to be part of the Ottoman Empire from 1538-1635, and from 1849 until the end of WWI in 1918. Because regular Tanzimat administration had yet to be established in the Hijaz and surrounding areas, Yemen may not have been included in empire-wide censuses (conducted primarily for administrative and military purposes, focusing on male inhabitants). During the British occupation of southern Yemen (1839-1967), more systematic records were kept, including detailed administrative files. The International Labor Organization has noted that censuses were conducted in 1973 and 1988 in the former People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (PDRY) and in 1975 and 1986 in the former Yemen Arab Republic (YAR). After unification, a national census was conducted in 1994, providing comprehensive demographic data.[1][2]
