Purpose[edit | edit source]

To add books and collections from the FamilySearch Catalog to corresponding Underserved Countries Topic pages.

Video Instructions[edit | edit source]

[ Video Instructions]

Task List[edit | edit source]

  • [ Task List]

Part A - Review Spreadsheet and Add Missing Books[edit | edit source]

Step One - Sign Up[edit | edit source]

  • A spreadsheet of online books and collections has already been compiled. Books not online were not extracted from the FS catalog. You will be double checking the catalog for any additional books or collections and adding them to the spreadsheet using a Google sheet.

  • Go to the spreadsheet and choose a country to work on by signing your name in Column A. [ Spreadsheet].

Step Two - Go to the FamilySearch Catalog[edit | edit source]

  • Go to the FamilySearch Catalog by clicking on this link: FS Catalog

  • Sign in to FamilySearch using your FamilySearch username and password.

  • Using the FS Catalog search screen, type in the country you signed up for and press the button, Search.

  • A list of topics will appear for the country.

  • Click on each topic and review the entry to see if it is already on the spreadsheet under that topic.
  • If the catalog entry is already on the spreadsheet, go to the next entry or topic.
  • If the catalog entry is not on the spreadsheet, go to Part B below.

  • Identifying if it is on the Spreadsheet:
  • Sometimes it is difficult to determine if a book or collection is already on the spreadsheet. Click on the link to view the actual entry to help identify more about the book or collection. If you are not sure, add the entry on the spreadsheet and it will be checked when added to the Wiki.

Part B - Adding the Catalog Entry[edit | edit source]

Step One - Adding Catalog Entries[edit | edit source]

  • Because the entry in the catalog was not on the spreadsheet, we are going to add it now.

  • Open the entry by clicking on the link.

  • Copy and paste each piece of information onto the spreadsheet in the correct columns.

  • Title: after pasting the title on the page, capitalize the title IF IT IS IN ENGLISH. If it is not, skip this step.
  • Author: Rearrange the author's name so that the first name is first followed by the middle and last name.
  • Publisher: Add the publisher's information.
  • Place of Publication: Add the place of publication.
  • Data of Publication: Add the date of the publication.
Call number: If this entry is for a book, add the complete book call number.
Microfilm/fiche number: If there is a microfilm or fiche number associated with this entry, add the first film/fiche listed in the catalog entry to this column.
Title Number: Go to the URL for the catalog entry and copy and paste the title number to the spreadsheet. You can double click the number and it will automatically highlight, then copy the title number.
Digital Library Link: If this is a book and it is online in the FamilySearch Digital Library, there will be a link stating so. Click on this link first. Then copy the Digital Library book number in the URL and paste it on the spreadsheet. You can double click the number and it will automatically highlight, then copy the title number.

Step Two - Adding Entries Under other Locality Subjects[edit | edit source]

  • Sometimes a collection covers more than one country or subject. To save time, look for this entry under each country topic that is listed on the entry.
  • If the entry is not already on the spreadsheet for that country and topic, add all the information you put in in Step One. Repeat it for each Locality Subject listed in the FS Catalog.
  • If the entry is already on the spreadsheet for that country and topic, go to the next Locality Subject entry. If you have checked each Locality Subject for the entry, finish the entries or topic for the country in the catalog.

Exceptions:

  • Do not add serial publications to the spreadsheet. You will know it is a serial publication if no book call number or microfilm/fice number is listed. Skip these entries.

  • Once you are done, go to the next entry or topic and repeat Step Two of Part A above. Continue until you are done.
