The name signifies the church of St. Peter, the distinguishing appellation having been added from the erection of a bridge over the river Teivy, at the distance of about half a mile, as has been vaguely conjectured, by King Stephen, in one of his inroads into Wales. The church, dedicated to St. Peter the Apostle, has been entirely rebuilt; it is a very handsome edifice, consisting of a nave and chancel, and when the tower shall be completed it will add greatly to the beauty of the surrounding landscape. The churchyard commands a fine view of the Vale of Teivy. There are places of worship for '''Independents''', '''Wesleyans''', and '''Calvinistic Methodists'''; and four Sunday schools.<ref>Lewis, Samuel A., ''[http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=47840#s4 A Topographical Dictionary of Wales]'' (1849), pp. 459-473.
