Archives and Libraries

Archives collect and preserve original documents of organizations such as churches or governments. Libraries generally collect published sources such as books, maps, and microfilm.
If you plan to visit a repository, contact them and ask for information about their collection, hours, services, and fees. Ask if they require you to have a reader’s ticket (a paper indicating you are a responsible researcher) to view the records, and ask how to obtain one.
Although the records you need may be in an archive or library, the FamilySearch Library may have microfilmed and/or digitized copies of them.

It should be noted that most records relating to Singapore were damaged or lost during the Japanese occupation, but the country has done a marvelous job of preserving what records could be recovered.^[1]

The National Library of Singapore houses a wide variety of different books and records. Some of these are available digitally on their Digital sources.
NewspaperSG is an online resource of current and historic Singapore and Malaya newspapers. Search digital archive of newspapers published between 1831-2009, or find information on over 200 newspaper titles in the National Library’s microfilm collection. Full-text is only available for issues up to 1989. t
