Historys[edit | edit source]
- The first settlement in the area of the current Baralt Municipality was made by indigenous Arawaks, coming from the center of Venezuela, being dominated by the Spanish, they were led to Nueva Zamora de Maracaibo in the year 1576.
- During the first decades of the 20th century, the then Sucre district was a coastal area with few inhabitants and isolated from the rest of the country.
- In 1912 the Caribbean Oil Company, linked to Royal Dutch Shell, began oil exploration in the area.
- In 1916 the first refinery in Venezuela was built in San Timoteo.
- The Baralt District was created on April 3, 1948, separating it from the Sucre District (current Sucre municipality (Zulia)), due to the need to manage the oil zone separately from the agricultural and fishing zone.
- On January 1, 1976, Mene Grande was the venue for the act of nationalization of the oil industry.
- In 1989 the District becomes Baralt Municipality.
- The municipality of Baralt has a population of approximately 154,000 people. [1]
