British Colonization (1900-1970)[edit | edit source]
Tonga became a British protected state under the Treaty of Friendship on 18 May 1900 to discourage German advances. The protected status ended on 4 June 1970 and Tonga joined the Commonwealth of Nations. Tonga has never lost indigenous governance, making it unique in the Pacific. [1]
