The Portuguese seized control in this area in 1515. Rule changed from the Portuguese to the Ottomans in 1550. [1]

The Ottomans were preferred over the Portuguese in 1550 and took control. They were expelled in 1670. [2] The Ottomans took control again in 1871. In 1915, they withdrew their forces. [3]

Qatar became a British protectorate on 3 November 1916. Independence was gained on 3 September 1971. [4]
