Preparing for your visit
We have a few tips about using the center's equipment.
- After you schedule your appointment, a few things to know:
- Verify that you have your items in a protective case to transport to the Family History Center and organized in the way you'd like to work through your files.
- Bring a USB or thumb drive to transfer your files onto upon completing digitization. (This is where the digital files will be copied for you to take them home.) Note: Bring at least a 3.0 speed on thumb drive to digitize your info. The 2.0 speed causes problems.
- Dust off items before using any of the equipment for digitizing your items.
- Be sure that you work with a consultant who will assist you with using the various scanning equipment.
- Face all photos the same way when using the rapid scanner
- Have your slides in order and labeled.
- Upon completing be sure to copy the digital files onto your USB/thumb drive.
Available Equipment
Our center has a wide variety of equipment geared toward making it easy for your to scan and digitize your family heirlooms and media. We have the following equipment available use:
- High Speed Photo Scanners: Scans up to 500 photos in 10 minutes or less. Scans items up to 8.5 inches wide.
- Flatbed Scanner: Our flatbed scanner can scan your odd sized images and documents. Including small photos that won't feed through the high speed scanner, and thick pages that are too large to go through the high speed scanner.
- Slide & Negative Scanner & Light Table: We can scan a variety of different sizes of slides, films, and negatives in our slide scanner.
- Reel to Reel 8 mm converter: Come use our new reel to reel converter to turn your 8mm films into digital files that can be shared and preserved.
- VHS Digitizer: With this digitizer you can turn your old home movies into a digital file that can be viewed and shared more easily. (Including: Hi-8, Digital 8, Mini DV PLUS)
- Cassette Tape Digitizers: This equipment will allow you to take old cassette tapes with your family recordings on them and turn them into a digital file that can be shared and copied digitally.
- Book Scanner: Our book scanner can be used to digitize any bound items that you may have including scrapbooks, journals, calendars, and more. . . . You can save the files as individual jpg's or as a complete PDF, or both.
- ShotBox: This light box is designed to allow you to digitize all of your heirlooms that can't be replicated, but can at least be preserved and shared in a quality image. You can select from various backdrops and backgrounds, including green screen if you'd like to delete the background of the image later. The box is 14 1/4" wide, 15" deep, and 15" tall, so any heirloom that will fit inside can be imaged.
