Brief History[edit | edit source]

23rd Regiment, North Carolina Infantry [formerly the 13th Volunteers] was organized at Weldon, North Carolina, in July, 1861. Re-designated as the 23rd Infantry Regiment, on 14 November 1861. Reorganized on 16 April 1862. It surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, on 9 April, 1865, 4 officers and 82 men of which 35 were armed. [1] [2]

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.
