The 22nd Regiment, Massachusetts Infantry was orginized at Lynnfield September 4 to October 6, 1861, and moved to Washington, D. C., October 8-11.They were attached to Martindale's Brigade, Porter's Division, Army of the Potomac, to March, 1862, 1st Brigade, 1st Division, 3rd Army Corps, Army of the Potomac, to May, 1862, and1st Brigade, 1st Division, 5th Army Corps, to March, 1864, and 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 5th Army Corps, to October, 1864. They were relieved August 8 and guard duty at City Point till October 5, and mustered out October 17, 1864.[1]

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.
