Researching in the Southern States[edit | edit source]

Instructor: Kathryn Marshall

The Southern States were home to exceptionally diverse and insular populations that generated unique record sets. The life circumstances of plantation dwellers, Quakers, the Five Civilized Tribes, French and Spanish citizenry, gold diggers, and refugee groups each led to documentation related to themselves alone. This presentation races through Southern history, pointing out resources for indentured servants, indigenous ancestors, and African Americans. Learn specific strategies for combining records to discover otherwise hard-to-find relationships. Genealogy has always been a thinker’s activity – possibly no more so than in the Southern States.

Instructor: Kathryn Marshall

The key to success in European research is identifying the ancestor’s home town and parish. Learn how to find that all important home town using American records. Centennia software (demo) is particularly useful for tracking jurisdiction changes. Because of Europe’s war torn past and ever changing governments, the church was the primary vital records keeper. A large proportion of Eastern Europeans were Jewish, battling regimes that opposed them and forcing mass migrations.
