Valuable records of those who served in the military in New Spain from 1786 to 1800 are at the General Archives in Simancas, Spain, and on microfilm at the FamilySearch Library (, for an index see ). You will also find military information in the Spanish Archives of New Mexico and the Mexican Archives of New Mexico (see New Mexico Genealogy).
Cantonment Burgwin 1852-1860

The Simancas Archives cover only a short period of time of the military records of Colonial New Mexico; only a small number (perhaps up to 20) service records are available. The Spanish Archives of New Mexico (aka SANM, series II) have over 435 military enlistments. These records are also available at the FamilySearch Library (). Other records available at the FamilySearch Library include:

See New Mexico in the Civil War for information about New Mexico Civil War records, websites, etc. with links to articles about the New Mexico regiments involved in the Civil War.
Fort Marcy 1846 -- Textual records of this fort, 1852-1894, including registers, reports, and correspondence, are in the National Archives and are described in Records of United States Army, Continental Commands, 1821-1920, under the section entitled Records of Posts, 1820-1940 (Record Group 393.7).

The regimental pages often include lists of the companies with links to the counties where the companies started. Men in the companies often lived in the counties where the companies were raised. Knowing a county can help when researching more about the soldiers and their families.
Fort McRae -- Textual records of this fort, 1865-1876, including registers, reports, and correspondence, are in the National Archives and are described in Records of United States Army, Continental Commands, 1821-1920, under the section entitled Records of Posts, 1820-1940 (Record Group 393.7).

The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System allows name searching for soldiers. The result set gives the regiments for the soldiers. Then you can check the Wiki regiment pages to determine counties. Often knowing the counties that had men in a regiment will help you determine if a soldier was your ancestor.
Fort Selden -- Textual records of this fort, 1865-1891, including registers, reports, and correspondence, are in the National Archives and are described in Records of United States Army, Continental Commands, 1821-1920, under the section entitled Records of Posts, 1820-1940 (Record Group 393.7).

Selective Service

On 16 September 1940, President Roosevelt signed into law the first peacetime Selective Service Act. During WWII, the Selective Service System conducted six draft registrations; these records are held collectively in two groupings at the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) in St. Louis, MO. The registrations are part of Record Group 147 Records of the Selective Service System. From December, 1942 to August, 1945 no enlistments were allowed. The  Selective Service became the only way men entered the service for the remainder of the war.
World War I draft registration cards for men ages 18 to 45 may list address, birth date, birthplace, race, nationality, citizenship, and next of kin. Not all registrants served in the war. For registration cards for New Mexico, see:

On April 27, 1942, the Selective Service conducted the fourth of six draft registrations related to WWII. The "World War II Selective Service Draft Cards: Fourth Registration, 1942" is often referred to as the “Old Man’s Registration” or the “Old Man’s Draft" because it included men with a date of birth from April 28, 1877 to February 16, 1897. Since there is overlap in the WWI and WWII Selective Service registration, men born in the years 1877 to 1900 may have registered twice and have both WWII and WWI draft records.
To find an individual's draft card, it helps to know his name and residence at the time of registration. The cards are arranged alphabetically by county, within the county by draft board, and then alphabetically by surname within each draft board.

Spanish Service Records[edit | edit source]

Valuable records of those who served in the military in New Spain from 1786 to 1800 are at the General Archives in Simancas, Spain, and on microfilm at the Family History Library (Family History Library films 1156334-42, for index see Family History Library Europe book 946 M23e). You will also find military information in the Spanish Archives of New Mexico and the Mexican Archives of New Mexico (see New Mexico Genealogy).

The Simancas Archives is a dissapointment for researching the military records for Colonial New Mexico.  They only cover a short period of time and offer maybe up to 20 service records.  The Spanish Archives of New Mexico (aka SANM, series II) have over 435 military enlistment records available and are available at the Family History Library.  "Military Records of Colonial New Mexico Notas y 'Revistas (Notes & Musters)" is available at Family History Library and for purchase from Hispanic Genealogical Research Center of New Mexico.  "The Santa Fe Presidio Soldiers - Their Donation to the American Revolution" is available at the Family History Library and for purchase at the New Mexico Genealogy Society.

Civil War (1861-1865)[edit | edit source]

The Family History Library and the National Archives have an index to service records of Union soldiers who served in units from New Mexico (Family History Library films 821883-86), the service records (Family History Library films 471538-83), and the federal indexes to pensioners. The actual pension records are only available at the National Archives.

A special census was taken in 1890 of Union veterans of the Civil War. The returns for New Mexico are on Family History Library film 338203. A published index is available (Family History Library book 978.9 X22jv 1890).

Civil War Pension Index Cards - A free Internet index to pension applications of veterans who served in the US Army between 1861-1917 is available on FamilySearch Record Search. Each card gives the soldier’s name, application and certificate numbers, state of enlistment, and might include rank and death information. Other wars, of that time period, may be included.

A published roster of soldiers who died in the war is W. M. Haulsee, F. C. Howe, and A. C. Doyle, Soldiers of the Great War, Three Volumes. (Washington, D.C.: Soldiers Record Publishing Association, 1920; Family History Library  book 973 M23s; fiche 6051244). Volume 2 contains the New Mexico returns.
