Brief History[edit | edit source]

The 39th Regiment, Massachusetts Infantry was organized at Lynnfield August 13 to Septembr 2, 1862. There was a Grand Review May 23, and they mustered out June 1, 1865.[1]

For more information on the history of this unit, see:

Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin[edit | edit source]

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.

The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors database lists 1,895 men on its roster for this unit. Roster.
