Wiki Project Alberta Tasks – Standardize FHL Links

The purpose of this task is to find and repair Family History Library links on Alberta Province topic pages.
These links include FS Library films and books, online digital books and records found in the FamilySearch Record Search collection. This task is beginner task and requires intermediate experience with opening, reading, editing and reporting about linked FHL resources.

1. Check the Assignment Chart below to choose an Alberta topic to edit.
2. Sign up on the Assignment Chart to accept the task. Sign-up instructions are posted with the Assignment Chart.
3. For each topic page:
- Read your chosen Alberta page and locate the links to FamilySearch databases, films, and books.

- 1. If the new page states "Search Results" click once more on the record title.

- 3. Look at the URL in the white bar at the top of the page.
- The URL should begin with https://www.familysearch.org and continue with a series of symbols, letters and numbers.
- 4. Within the URL locate the word "item".
- 5. Ignore symbols, single numbers, and letters until you find only a series of numbers after the word "item". These numbers are often at the end of the URL.
- 6. Copy these numbers. This is called the title number.
- 7. Keep this catalog page open because you will need to refer to it again for the call numbers.
- B. Return to the original Alberta wiki page by clicking title in the tabs at the top of your Internet browser page.

- A. The incorrect link may say something like "Record Collection 16810122" .
- 1. Click the blue link to take you to the FamilySearch page about the collection.
- 2. Look at the URL in the white bar at the top of the page. The URL should begin with https://www.familysearch.org . The collection number is found at the end of the URL after the words "collection/".
- 3. Copy these numbers. This is called the collection number.
- 4. Also make a note of the collection title. It is in large type at the top of the page.
- 5. You may wish to keep this page open when returning to the Alberta wiki page. When you need the collection number or title, you may copy and paste between the collection page and the Alberta wiki page. Or, you may write this information down and type it into the Alberta wiki page.

- 7. The | and { } symbols are found below the backspace key on your keyboard. Use the Shift key to type these symbols.
- 8. The collection number is the number you found in the RecordSearch URL when you did step A-3 under this heading.
- 9. Type or paste the title name after the second "|" .
- 10. Be sure that you remove any parenthesis or periods found with the original link. The words Family History Library should be removed.
- 11. Scroll to the bottom of the page you are editing and type a summary sentence in the summary box below the edit box. Type something like, "Repaired FHL RecordSearch link".

If you are accepting this task:
- 1. Sign in to the wiki at the upper right-hand corner of this page. Use your FamilySearch account username and password.
- 2. Open the Assignment Chart for editing by clicking on the check mark in the box at the right opposite the Assignment Table heading.
- 3. Place your cursor in the box under the heading Name/Date Task Accepted and opposite your topic of choice.
- 4. Not all topics are included in the chart below. If your topic is not listed, this task is not yet ready for editing.
