When searching a specific place, the search results will include all images that are described by that place and any other images described by a place within the jurisdiction.

You may search by a major life event first, then specify a record type.

Image Group Number (DGS)

In many cases historical records are not digitized in any particular order, so the Image Group Number (DGS) cannot be used to determine record type and date range order. However, when you do find the record pertaining to an ancestor, it is always helpful to log the DGS number for future reference because you can search Explore Images by entering the DGS in the Image Group Number search field.

Custodian

When this data is available, it is hyperlinked. Clicking on the hyperlinked Custodian will take you to a search results screen showing all images FamilySearch has acquired from that Custodian.

Keyword

This field allows you to search open-text fields (not standardized), so it is helpful if searching for a specific volume, archive reference number, and/or manuscript title (Record Title).

DGS stands for Digital Genealogical Society also known as an Image Group Number. Each set of digital images is assigned a DGS number for identification purposes.
