==Background==

The French made the first European settlement in 1643. African slaves were soon brought to French Guiana. Slavery was outlawed in 1794. Between 1852 and 1953, France sent many prisoners to French Guiana though many died.  In the 1970s, refugees from Laos came.<ref>Wiki contributors, [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Guiana French Guiana], (accessed 4 February 2022).</ref>
