The Republic of Guinea is a multilingual country, with over 40 languages spoken. The official language is French, which was inherited from colonial rule. [1]
Several indigenous languages have been given the status of national languages:
- Fula or Pular - also known as Fulani, Fulah or Fulfulde. Spoken by 33.9% of the population in 2018. [2]
- Mandinka or Malinke - also known as Mandingo. spoken by 29.4% of the population [3]
- Susu - spoken by 21.2% of the population [4]
- Kissi
- Kpelle or Guerze
