Societies

Family and local history societies often publish helpful journals, transcripts, compiled genealogies and host websites. They may have ongoing projects to transcribe records and create indexes. Most societies publish queries in their journals and maintain lists of members’ research interests that may be helpful to you. You may want to join one of these societies, reap the benefits of their expertise and resources, or support its efforts.

Addresses of the societies are for the most part where their meetings are held as they are by-and-large not brick-and-mortar institutions.

The CBA South Midlands group, an autonomous local group under the umbrella of the national Council for British Archaeology. CBA South Midlands covers four counties – Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire. They are an educational charity working to involve people in archaeology and to promote the appreciation and care of the historic environment for the benefit of the present and future generations.

The Society prints records and documents relating to the ancient county and diocese of Lincoln. The website gives details of publications in print, some of which may include early material relating to Northamptonshire as it was part of the diocese of Lincoln until 1541.

Milton Keynes Heritage Association

Milton Keynes Heritage Association formed in 1994 by a number of local heritage groups and museums, with the aim of encouraging and developing co-operation between organisations having an interest in heritage in Milton Keynes, North Buckinghamshire, and South Northamptonshire. It also has a central role in promoting heritage, by working closely with Councils and other agencies. MKHA has around 60 member organisations, with a broad range of interests and a wide geographical coverage from Buckingham in the west, Olney in the east, Towcester in the north, and Woburn Sands in the south.
