Penco was founded in 1843 and on October 5, 1550 the city of Concepción was established in this commune.
Penco corresponded to the 12th subdelegation of the Department of Coelemu for a few decades, and then joined the Department of Concepción. In 1891 the law that created the Municipality of Penco was enacted.
The current population of the commune of Penco is around 45,000 people^[1].
