In 1531, the Spanish arrived in Equador to begin colonization. On October 9, 1820, the first territory gained its independence from Spain and other costal provinces followed. Ecuador's official Independence Day is on May 24, 1822.

The regency of Algiers (parts of modern-day Algeria) was administered as a vassal state of the Ottoman Empire in North Africa from 1515 to 1830. Rule changed over to France when the French invaded in 1830.[1]
